The East Khasi Hills district administration in Meghalaya on January 3 prohibited the use of explosives, fishing nets, poisonous chemicals and other destructive fishing practices at Umngot, Umlow and Umngi rivers.

“I hereby prohibit the illegal killing of fishes at the above rivers by using explosives, fishing nets, poisonous chemicals and other destructive fishing practices by any persons,” district magistrate Isawanda Laloo said in her order.

This came after information was received that some miscreants have been using explosives, fishing nets, poisonous chemicals and other destructive fishing practices along the stretch of the rivers Umngot, Umlow and Umngi (through Kenbah (Syntein), Kenmynsaw (Syntein), Domskong (syntein) Mawrapat, Mawsawa Mawkasain, Kenbah Malai, Phlangwanbroi, Kynrang, Rangweng, Pyndensohsaw, Jyllep, Khiehriat, Pomblang, Laitumsaw, Dangar, Dangar Dop, Umsawrang, Photstein, Umlynter, Lalpani and Pynden Borsora) under East Khasi Hills district.

The district magistrate then said that such rampant killing of fish may result in endangerment of aquatic life and utilization of poisonous chemicals may have an adverse impact on the people living in the surrounding areas unless prevented.
