Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has slammed the role of BJP both at the Centre and the state regarding the NRC update. Gogoi said that the BJP governments are not serious enough with crucial issue like National Register of Citizens (NRC).
“I don’t think the BJP actually want to solve the problem. I have not seen any cabinet committee to enquire if the NRC works are going on smoothly or not. If not they should have raised the issue with Centre. They also need to inform the court, that NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela is not doing his work properly, if the state government is really unhappy,” Gogoi said during a press conference on August 3.
Going further, he said that the Centre is not even capable of making an error free list. Gogoi also targeted union home minister and BJP national president Amit Shah for not taking the NRC seriously.
“Either they are not sincere or incapable of making a perfect list. The Centre is not even capable of making the error free list, forget about the detection and detention. What was the main issue the election? Modi had told us… illegal foreigners will be sent off. Now, can he answer how many of them have been sent off? They are confused among themselves. Now, they (BJP) also wants to bring the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB),” Gogoi added.
The NRC which is being updated in Assam for the first time after 1951 has already left out around 41 lakh people and the final list is scheduled to be published on August 31. Though it was supposed to be published on July 31, the Supreme Court extended a month due to flood.
Gogoi also doubted if the final list will be an error free and said that it might even create more problems than solving those.
“I hope that the NRC list should be an error free but I’m doubtful now seeing the recent developments. See, I have seen many genuine Indians names’ have been left out in the draft lists, so, how can I expect that the final list will not left out genuine Indians? They are Hindu Bengalis, Gorkhas, tea tribe people and Muslims. Even some illegal foreigners’ name too will be there… It seems that they (authority) have done it carelessly. Why can’t they punish those officials? There should be an enquiry on that who helped foreigners name in or Indians name out…or else I will have to believe that the BJP actually doesn’t want the NRC to happen,” Gogoi added.
Slamming Amit Shah, Gogoi said that he never seen the BJP national president discussing the NRC issue with the state government.
“It’s such a serious issue, but I have never seen Amit Shah discuss this with the state government. My question is if Hajela has committed any mistake, why the Centre is not taking any action? He is not a constitutional authority, not even is boss… he is just an official of the government,” Gogoi added.
