World record-holding mountaineer Anshu Jamsenpa of Arunachal Pradesh, who has recently been honoured with Padma Shri, believe that India can be a great mountaineering destination.

Anshu, who has climbed Mount Everest five times, said that she preferred to explore Indian peaks than attempt to climb ‘Seven Summits’, the highest peaks in every continent, like most mountaineers.

“I have always believed that we should explore our own areas. There are still so many unexplored peaks in India which we all can try,” Anshu told The News Mill.

“I have been trying to climb all the peaks in all the states in India since 2009. Let me see what I can do in the days to come. My motive is to try to tab Indian potentialities and make India a destination for the climbers and mountaineers from all across the globe,” she said.

Anshu Jamsenpa, who hails from Bomdila in Arunachal Pradesh, has climbed Mount Everest five times so far among other major peaks in India. She climbed the world’s highest peak twice in 2017 (double ascent within five days) which is a world record for a woman.

Earlier, she unfurled the Indian flag at Mt Everest in 2013 and twice in 2011 (double ascent in 10 days). She also attempted in 2015 but it couldn’t be completed due to a massive earthquake in Nepal.

She is one of the very few civilian mountaineers to have been honoured with the fourth highest civilian award.

“If we can explore Indian peaks, the outsiders too will start coming here. That way we can promote India and its adventure sports around the globe. India can be a great destination. There is huge scope in India – be it in Arunachal Pradesh or any other states.”

Anshu Jamsenpa dedicated this award to the Indian Mountaineering Foundation and mountaineering fraternity of India.

In 2018, Anshu was honoured with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, the highest national recognition for outstanding achievements in the field of adventure on land, sea and air.

She also thanked her family, well-wishers and all the sponsors who have helped her throughout the journey.
