As the water level in the Brahmaputra river continues to rise in Guwahati, the government has suspended all passenger ferry service between Guwahati and North Guwahati from May 18 onwards.

To ensure safety of lives, all Guwahati-North Guwahati and Guwahati-Kurua ferry services have been called off after 6 pm on May 18 due to the rising water level.

A notice from the inland water transport department read: “This is for general information to all concerned that in view of rising water level as well as heavy current along with debris in large amount like wooden logs in the river Brahmaputra, operation of all departmental boats / vessels in the Guwahati based ferry services under IWT Division Guwahati are hereby temporarily suspended after 6 pm with effect from May 18, 2022 until further order.”

The floods have wreaked havoc in several parts of Assam, with 26 districts being affected.

Additionally, landslides have caused damage in the districts of Kamrup Metro and Dima Hasao.

Presently, the Kopili, Disang, Barak and Kushiyara are flowing above the danger level at several places as per CWC bulletin.
