Biplab Deb

A senior Congress leader and former MLA Gopal Roy filed an FIR against Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb accusing him of triggering panic by providing false information on Coronavirus-infected people in Northeast.

Addressing media after reviewing the COVID-19 prevention preparation in Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) on April 2, the chief minister said that COVID-19 positive cases in Karimganj district of Assam is 16 and it was aired and telecasted widely in the state, which has further panic the society.

“The statement of Deb was deliberate, if not he could have corrected it by that time. Karimganj is sharing a border with North Tripura district and still, there is the movement of people from both sides because of administrative failure of the state government. Naturally, when CM said 16 persons of Karimganj had got infected, there has been complete chaos and tension brewed up,” Roy alleged.

He mentioned that only two cases of COVID-19 positive were identified in Manipur and one case from Karimganj.

“Such irresponsible statement and a deliberate rumor from chief minister of a state further panic the people of South Assam and Manipur. If it was a mistake, he could have corrected it immediately but it did not happen, which is a criminal offense under Indian Panel Code (IPC),” Roy said.
