Anand Prakash Tiwari, managing director at Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) inaugurated the first ever Guwahati Theatre Festival on September 14 by lighting the ceremonial lamp along with festival director Dr Asha Kuthari, festival chairman Sunit Jain and editor, GPlus and festival advisor Swapnil Bharali. The inaugural season of the 5-day festival opened up with the play Hamlet – The Clown Prince, directed by popular actor and director Rajat Kapoor.

Hamlet – The Clown Prince is a comedy take on the famous Shakespeare tragic drama. The auditorium was full with viewers appreciating the performance conducted first time in the city.

The festival will end with its finale play on the September 18. Nationally acclaimed plays like Hamlet – The Clown Prince, The Living Room, 2 to Tango 3 to Jive, The Truth of Womanhood and One on One – all from leading theatre production houses of Mumbai will be showcased in the 5 days. The plays would feature popular names like Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Neil Bhoopalam, Saurabh Shukla, Kalki Koechlin, Rajit Kapoor, Achint Kaur, among others.

“Through the festival, we aim to bring in celebrated personalities from the world of theatre to city (most of them visiting for the first time) and take back great learnings about the state, its people and culture thus being our ambassadors for the state,” said Sunit Jain. The festival is organised by GPlus, leading English weekly of Guwahati in association with Ballantine’s and Audi Guwahati and it aims to showcase world-class performances by leading theatre actors from Mumbai coupled with quality entertainment making it a prestigious landmark in the cultural landscape of Guwahati.
