Five persons, including a senior forest officer, died in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district while they tried to clean a 35-feet underground water tank and went inside it.

Police said that the five persons went inside the underground water tank of an under-construction building and died due to suffocation while two others were rescued on March 29.

Meghalaya Police said that the five persons died due to poisonous smoke that was being emitted from the water pump.

The deceased include Hamklet Suchiang, who was the owner of the under-construction building and a divisional forest officer (DFO).
