Former Arunachal Pradesh minister Tako Dabi died after prolonged illness on Thursday night. The former speaker of the state legislative assembly breathed his last at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Naharlagun. He was admitted to the hospital in December.

The former minister and MLA, who earlier represented the Nari Koyu constituency in the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh was a senior Congressman.

Dabi did his schooling from Pasighat in 1973 before completing Pre-University from Jawahar Lal Nehru College, Pasighat in 1975 and graduation from the same college in 1977.

Commenting on the loss, Arunachal Pradesh deputy chief minister Chowna Mein, said, “I am deeply saddened with the passing away of veteran leader, former minister and former speaker Tako Dabi ji. He was a very straight forward, hard working and a man of discipline and served the state in various capacities as a teacher, as minister of various departments and also as speaker of Legislative Assembly. His contribution shall always be remembered. I extend my deep condolences to the bereaved family members and pray that the Almighty gave them enough strength to bear with the irreparable loss and also pray for the eternal peace of the departed soul.”

Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu, in a condolence letter to Dabi’s wife, wrote, “With a heavy heart, I write to share the grief of losing one of the most prominent personalities of political history of Arunachal Pradesh, Tako Dabi, former minister, teacher and an influential and dedicated leader in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. In his demise, our state has lost a seasoned politician and a person of high probity who was disciplined and committed. I believe, leaving this mortal world will not diminish the love and affection showered on him by the people and his god-fearing soul will remain immortal.”

Born on August 8, 1957, in Tene village, Dabi initially took over teaching as his profession. He started his political career in 1990 and won the MLA seat from the 36 Nari-Koyu constituency consecutively for 5 terms. During his tenure as law maker, he served the state in various capacities. He served as the Speaker of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, held home, education, WRD, agriculture, horticulture portfolios as minister till 2014. Dabi lost to Kento Rina of the BJP in the 2014 Assembly polls.
