Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi passed away in Guwahati on November 23.
The veteran Congress leader was suffering from post-COVID distress and had faced multiple organ failure. His health detoriated since November 21 when he was moved to “full ventilator support” at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati.
Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed about the death of Tarun Gogoi on November 23 evening. Sarma confirmed that Gogoi was pronounced dead by doctors at 5.34 pm in the ICU of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
“The last ECG done at 5.34 pm showed that there is no heart activity,” he said.
The body of Gogoi will be laid in state in the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati on November 24 for people to pay their last respects.
Sarma said the last rites are likely to be performed in Guwahati as Gogoi’s wife, Dolly Gogoi, is also ailing.
The former Union minister, three-time Assam chief minister and sitting member of Assam assembly is survived by his wife Dolly Gogoi, son Gaurav Gogoi, a Lok Sabha member, and daughter Chandrima Gogoi who lives in the US.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who was in Dibrugarh, had rushed to Guwahati as the health condition of the veteran leader detoriated.
Tarun Gogoi’s health detoriated on November 21
Veteran Congress leader and three-time Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s health condition deteriorated on November 21 due to post-COVID-19 complications besides multi-organ failure, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said.
Following post-Covid-19 complications, the 85-year-old veteran politician, who was on Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) since he was admitted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on November 2, was put under invasive ventilation.
Sarma said that on November 21 afternoon Gogoi’s condition deteriorated with problems in breathing and then the doctors started an intubation ventilator, which is machine driven ventilation.
“The doctors are trying hard to revive his organs with medicines and other medical methods. The doctors will also attempt a dialysis,” Sarma had said.
Doctors of GMCH were in constant touch with experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi.
Tarun Gogoi was released from hospital after recoveing from COVID-19
Gogoi was discharged from the hospital on October 25 after he recovered from the COVID-19 infection and other post-recovery complications after more than 60 days.
He was administered plasma therapy and subsequently became stable.
The octogenarian Congress leader was under observation of the team of nine doctors at his official residence.
Gogoi had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 25 and was admitted to the GMCH the next day.
