Former president Pranab Mukherjee passed away at a hospital in New Delhi on August 31, his son Abhijit Mukherjee informed.

The veteran leader’s health deteriorated on August 31 and he was in a septic shock due to lung infection, the Army Research and Referral Hospital had said earlier in the day.

Mukherjee was hospitalized for the past 21 days and had been critical following a brain surgery.

“There is a decline in the medical condition of Pranab Mukherjee since yesterday (August 30),” the hospital had said earlier on August 31.

Mukherjee was also found to be COVID-19 positive when he was admitted on August 10 for life-saving emergency surgery for a brain clot. There has been no improvement in his health status since.

Condolence messages poured in soon after the announcement of the former president’s death. A message from President Ram Nath Kovind said: “Sad to hear that former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee is no more. His demise is passing of an era. A colossus in public life, he served Mother India with the spirit of a sage. The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons. Condolences to his family, friends & all citizens.”
