Breaking her own record, Mirabai Chanu of Manipur won the first gold medal for India at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, 2018.

Commenting on her performance, Mirabai Chanu said that she was thrilled. “I’m so happy to break my own record. I worked very hard and wanted to achieve this before I came here. After the world championships in November last year, I have been preparing for this moment. I also had a great training session during our camps,” Chanu said.

The 23-year-old champion lifter smashed her way to a new personal record as well as the Games record by breaking six records in six lifts to bag the top prize in the women’s 48kg weightlifting.

This was her second commonwealth games medal in the same number of events. In the Glasgow games in 2014, she won silver. Chanu now targets the Asian games. She said she will try hard to better her performance.

“Now, I think the Asian games will be tough so I need to work even harder to achieve my goal,” she added. The Jakarta Asian Games, 2018, starts from August 18.

In 2017, she won the Gold medal in the Women’s 48 kg category by lifting a competition record 194 kg in total (85 kg snatch, 109 kg clean and jerk) in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships held at Anaheim, CA, United States.
