Bodoland University constituted a nine-member committee recently to frame Nepali subject major/honours syllabus at degree level in various colleges under the university.
The committee is headed by Ladu Singh vice-chancellor of BU as its chairman and PK Patra in-charge of academic registrar as convenor and Indira Boro, dean of languages as member along with faculty members from Gorkha community teaching Nepali language in colleges and members of Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha literary organisation of Gorkhas of Assam.
Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh has welcomed the decision of the university.
“Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh – national social organisation of Indian Gorkhas welcomes the decision of Bodoland University to form Nepali subject syllabus committee. It has been a long-pending demand of Gorkhas of Assam to be able to study their own constitutionally recognised language since two decades now. We are happy that Bodoland University has formally decided to introduce Nepali in colleges affiliated under the university,” BGP Assam president Prakash Dahal said.
Nanda Kirati Dewan, president of Bharatiya Gorkha Yuva Parisangh (BhaGoYuP) said: “We have raised the demand of introduction of full-fledged Nepali department in any one of the universities in Assam which has around 25 lakh Nepali speaking population. Gorkhas in Bodoland Territorial Region is the second highest population of the region so Bodoland University is perfect position to introduce Nepali department with our above justifications. We are happy to have received communication along with its notification from Bodoland University about formation of the syllabus committee of Nepali subjects in the university.”
