The Assam government on March 6 proposed to appoint international sporting champions of the state as civil service officers, with ‘Dhing Express’ Hima Das being offered the first such position.

The proposal was made by state Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the annual Budget for 2020-21.

“To encourage sportspersons who succeed in winning in Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, I propose to bring in a policy to designate such high achievers, as Grade-I officers of the state government,” the minister said.

“Our government is pleased to announce Hima Das, our own ‘Dhing Express’, as the first recipient of this policy. She will be offered the position of Deputy Superintendent of Police,” he added.

Sarma said the move was to encourage a vibrant sports culture in the state.
