One of Northeast India’s most popular food groups, Guwahati Foodie, organized a food photography contest to spread awareness of the local cuisines of Assam. The contest, which started on the World Tourism Day on September 27 and continued till the World Food Day on October 16, culminated with the distribution of prizes on October 31.

The contest was open for all members of the nearly 1,30,000-strong Guwahati Foodie group. Participants could send in any number of entries for this contest. The photograph had to represent either a single dish or a platter of food of any of the communities of Assam.

Out of more than 500 entries, 3 winners were selected through a two-level selection process by an expert panel of judges.

Assam state president of Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Sidhanta Ankur Barua, gave away the prizes of the contest on October 31. The contest was supported by Momo Ghar, Barbeque Nation, Fat Belly, Big FM, Life’s Purple and Sterling Reserve.

Apart from other events like EATucation, and festival specific contests, Guwahati Foodie organizes these Ethnic Food Photography contests to popularize the traditional cuisines of the region. “The core idea behind these contests is to let people know the difference between a truly ethnic dish of the region and a fusion dish,” said Guwahati Foodie admin Sisir Kalita.

He also thanked all the sponsors for supporting this initiative.

The winners were: Alongbar Basumatary for a traditional Boro platter, Garima Baruah for pitha and tea, and Sikha Moni Das for showcasing an Assamese platter.

While congratulating the contestants, Sidhanta Ankur Barua said: “It is a positive sign for the society that the youth take interest in cooking and presenting the traditional cuisines of the state. This will go a long way to preserve as well as exhibit the culture and traditions of Assam to the rest of the world.”
