Guwahati will host the 1st junior men’s national boxing championship, 2017 from July 12. This is the second major boxing championship in the city after the first Elite (Senior) National Boxing Championship in December last year.

“We on behalf of the organising committee and Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA), take the pleasure to inform you that the premier boxing organization of India Boxing Federation of India has given us the auspicious task of hosting the 1st Junior Men’s National Boxing Championship, 2017,” said Hemanta Kalita, secretary of Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) addressing a press conference on Friday.

The championship will be held at Deshbhakt Tarun Ram Indoor Stadium, Ulubari in the city.

Altogether 350 boxers, 160 technical officials including the coaches, referees and judges and other technical officials from 34 state and associations would be participating in this championship.

“Hosting such an event is a big positive impact on the youths of the state. Leading players representing the states will be participating in this mega event. This event will not only promote boxing as a sport it will also foster national integrity,” added Kalita.

This championship would also be a direct entry for the upcoming international boxing championship in Philippines.

Initially, the championship was supposed to be held in Goa but in the last moment it was shifted to Guwahati.

In December, Guwahati successfully conducted the maiden elite boxing championship. “We could conduct it successfully and this time also we are hopeful of doing it in the same way,” asserted Kalita.
