Assam State Zoo at Guwahati is encouraging citizens to adopt healthy lifestyle by allowing trekking inside the zoo premises.

This initiative comes after allowing cycling inside the zoo premises. Besides, the zoo will also create clubs to bring the people closer to the zoo. An annual membership will be provided to the residents to take part in the activities.

“We are promoting a healthy lifestyle among the residents by allowing the people to do cycling here. Besides, it also helps to build a close relationship with the people. We are glad to have an overwhelming response from the city residents who everyday come here for cycling,” zoo DFO Tejas Mariswamy said.

Following this, the authorities are planning to open a trekking route for the enthusiasts. As per the plan, there will be a 6 kilometre trekking inside the zoo which will be opened shortly.

“We can start trekking twice a month in the morning. Two people from the zoo will accompany them. We are planning to start it in the next few weeks. The trek route is beautiful. There will be an annual membership fee of around Rs 1000,” Mariswamy said.

The cycling initiative, which has been welcomed by the residents, was started in November, 2017. The DFO said that around 20 cyclists visit the zoo every morning. The zoo has at least 15 bicycles which can be borrowed and the visitors can also bring their own bicycles.

Interested individuals need to pay Rs 30 for an hour if they want to hire a cycle from the zoo authorities.

“We allow the individuals to bring their own cycle and go inside the zoo. They need to pay Rs 30 as a fee. The process will continue throughout the day,” Mariswamy added.

The Assam State Zoo occupies an area of 175 hectares which includes a botanical garden spread across an area of 82 hectares. It is located in the Hengrabari reserve forest area of Guwahati.
