A most-wanted Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militant, Azhar Ali, has been arrested in Assam and is currently in police custody.

Official reports said in Guwahati on October 17 that Azhar was arrested by Barpeta Police on Tuesday when he was reportedly visiting his home at Rowmari in the district.

Ali was produced before the court on October 16 and was remanded in seven days police custody.

Reports from Barpeta said Azhar had left the village in 2014 and when neighbours asked his family where Azhar was, they claimed that he was working somewhere.

Security personnel would routinely visit the family in search of Azhar. He is reportedly a hardcore member of the militant outfit and was recruited into JMB by another top JMB leader from the same village, who was arrested a few years ago and is currently in judicial custody.
