All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal has slammed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for being accused as an ‘enemy of the state’, said that the saffron party is abusing the Muslims as a whole.
Assam minister and BJP’s key strategist Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly targeted AIUDF and Ajmal, saying the perfume baron-MP was an ‘enemy’ of Assam and blamed the Congress-AIUDF pre-poll alliance for making the poll battle in Assam, a ‘conflict of civilisations’.
“Are all the Muslims descendants of Mughals? In fact, there is no trace that we are directly related to the Mughals. By terming Mughals, he (Himanta) is insulting us. It shows his hatred towards us. He is trying to abuse us as a community,” Ajmal said.
“We are not Mughals. We should fight back as a community against this type of defamation. Even the majority of communities do not like this,” he said.
The opposition AIUDF, which is contesting in 19 seats as a part of the grand alliance in the Assam assembly polls, has formed a pre-election alliance with its former rival Congress only “for the sake of resisting BJP’s return”.
In the 2016 Assam assembly elections, division of voters between the Congress and the AIUDF led to the victory of BJP and its alliance in about 18 seats.
Ajmal, the sitting MP from Dhubri, has also ruled out any possibilities of him being a chief ministerial candidate. He said their priority is to address the key issues, including the citizenship questions, which he said the BJP-led government did not undertake seriously.
“We have already declared Assam Accord should be implemented, the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) should be scrapped and NRC should be implemented. Flood erosion should be checked. Inflation, unemployment, farmers issues should be resolved. The two defunct paper mills should be reopened. We have promised to work on this and will try to do so,” Ajmal said.
“The government is claiming 19.06 lakh people were left out from the NRC. We will look into the matter how to resolve it once we come into power. A few days ago, former chief justice Ranjan Gogoi said that the Supreme Court judgement was 100 per cent correct, there were no flaws in it and it should be implemented as it is. We will keep our stand with this statement that whatever Supreme Court has observed under Ranjan Gogoi supervision should be executed likewise,” he said.
