Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on September 9 expressed hope that the 2022 budget session of the assembly would be held at the new building being built at New Shillong Township in Mawdiangdiang.

“We would like to hold the 2022 budget session in the new assembly building and 50 per cent work of the project has been completed,” Lyngdoh said.

“When I compare it to the last inspection I conducted in the month of June, the progress report is very fantastic. This is very challenging and in fact, they [contractors] have not come to us with excuses, they came to us with solutions,” he said.

“They are positive that by the end of October the balance work will be completed and hopefully complete the construction of the building by December 2021,” the speaker added.

The speaker, along with Urban Affairs Minister Hamletson Dohling, Chief Secretary MS Rao and other senior officials, inspected the construction site and reviewed the work progress.

He said that holding the 2022 budget session in the new building would be significant as Meghalaya would be celebrating its 50th year of statehood in 2022.

The speaker said that the state government has assured that fund flow will not be an issue to ensure the completion of the new assembly building.

The new building is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 127 crore. The PWD, which is the implementing agency of the project, has been sanctioned Rs 60 crore so far.
