Actors playing key roles in III Smoking Barrels – a six-language film – feel that the film will help in projecting the Northeast in a way like never before.

The film, directed by Sanjib Dey and produced by Amit Malpani, is being promoted as the first film made in the region to get a pan-India release. It will release on September 21.

Altogether six languages – Assamese, Hindi, English, Bengali, Nagamese and Manipuri – have been used in the film. The characters have used either Hindi or English as a common language.

Besides the locals, actors from Bengal and Mumbai have also played some crucial roles in the film.

“For instance, there are so many people in Mumbai who don’t even know the capitals of the Northeast states and what happens here. They almost know nothing…which is really unfortunate. But this movie definitely will have more connect in the Northeast as it belongs to the region. And as its getting a pan-India release, I assume whoever watches it will have a certain insight to the Northeast which is lovely. It would be a great way to enlighten people…and for the Northeast to reach out to the country,” Indraneil Sengupta, who plays the role of an executive, told The News Mill.

Mumbai-based Indraneil who is known for his roles in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kaahani and Prakash Jha’s Satyagraha among others also said that it’s a different kind of film having six languages.

Subrat Dutta, an alumnus of National School of Drama and one of the critically acclaimed actors of Hindi and Bengali films played the role of Mukhtar, a suspected citizen who gets involved in poaching.

“Normally, the films which are made here are not released -India. The beauty of the region now will be watched by the people of the country. And to play one of the lead roles is great and I feel lucky to be a part of the film,” Dutta told The News Mill.

Apart from Indraneil and Dutta, the film also features Shiny Gogoi, Siddharth Boro, Mandakini Goswami and Amrita Chattopadhyay among others.

Besides winning several awards in the Assam State Film Awards, the film also won the Silver Palm Award for best narrative feature at the 12th Mexico International Film Festival recently.
