IIT Guwahati has suspended a student on April 4 for sexual assault on a fellow girl student on March 28. The student was arrested by North Guwahati Police on April 3.

A statement issued by the premier institute said that the student was suspended with immediate effect. “The institute has been cooperating with the police on the investigation on the sexual assault of the girl student on campus. Prima facie, it has been found that the student Utsav Kadam has committed an act that has been considered a serious criminal offense by the judiciary leading to his arrest on 3rd April 2021 by the North Guwahati Police,” said the statement issued by IIT Guwahati.

An undergraduate girl student was allegedly raped inside the campus on March 28 on the day of Holi. She was first admitted to the IIT Guwahati hospital and was later taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.

Kadam has been suspended from the institute as recommended by the students’ disciplinary committee. Four other students have been isolated from each other on campus and will be retained on campus for further police investigations as well as internal investigations.

“These acts are a serious violation of the disciplinary rules of the institute, compromising the safety and security of students, hostel boarders and residents of the campus and disruptive to the institute environment. The institute condemns such heinous acts in the strongest possible terms. The institute is also putting in place enhanced safety and security measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,” the statement issued by IIT Guwahati added.

Though the victim’s medical report is yet to be out, GMCH sources said it was a clear case of sexual assault. They added that the girl might have been given some drinks laced with drugs or was forced to consume alcohol before the assault.
