Police seized huge quantity of illegal drugs worth Rs 6 crore in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on August 12.

Based on intelligence inputs, Karbi Anglong district police conducted an operation at Laharijan area under Bokajan police station in the hill district along Assam-Nagaland border on August 12 evening and seized over 2 kg banned drugs from the area.

Police had arrested a couple hailing from Nagaland who had carried the illegal drugs to deliver it to a agent along the inter-state border.

According to the Karbi Anglong district police, the drugs were concealed in 150 packets.

Karbi Anglong district police said that, market value of the seized illegal drugs is estimated at Rs 6 crore.

Karbi Anglong district Superintendent of Police (SP) PP Singh said: “We were planning to track the racket since last 15-20 days. One and half month back, we had recovered about 700 grams of suspected illegal drugs at Borpathar area and leading to that case we had also recovered 2 kg of the same substance. We are still working out following these recoveries. Yesterday, we have recovered about 2 kg of the substance and arrested two persons.”

The arrested persons were identified as Rossy Rengmei and her husband Ungma Kamei.

The police official further said that, while the lady was planning to deliver the drugs to an agent in Assam, police team caught the lady and seized the drugs.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: “Pursuing an old case @karbianglongpol have busted an inter-state gang of smugglers, arrested 2 persons & seized 2 kg illegal drugs. The total recovery in this case now is 4.848 kg drugs and this serves a major blow to the gang.”
