The ‘University Literary Festival 2019’ at Gauhati University, organised by the Post Graduate Students Union of 2018-19, kick-started at the varsity campus on Monday.

The three-day festival will be host to a range of competitions and events, including photography, debate, poetry, letter writing on post cards, painting and cultural nights among others.

Participating in the inaugural ceremony, senior journalist Nitumoni Saikia said, “We should take this literary festival as a platform to do constructive criticism for literature available here, especially the books. We have to study and discuss how the style and skills of each poem, article or story has changed. Buying books isn’t the only way to enhance the pride of literature festival. There should be positive analysis of articles, books, poem or prose.”

“Recently, there is a new trend in our literary society. A section of people write poetry, prose or novel to get awards. Those who are writing only for getting awards are responsible for destroying literature. This is a trend among both young authors and those associated with the Assam Sahitya Sabha,” he said.

Bidyut Bikash Boruah, literary secretary of the students union, while talking to The News Mill said, “The festival aims at promoting arts among students. The festival is a platform for the university students to disseminate their creative ideas to the society at large. It is an effort from our side to give a new height to the literature movement in Assam.”
