Barsapara stadium in Guwahati

Guwahati will host at least two Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in 2020 as Rajasthan Royals has opted for Barsapara Cricket Stadium as one of their home venues for the next season. Rajasthan Royals co-owner Manoj Bedale confirmed this at a press conference in Guwahati on November 6.

“It has been an exciting day for the Rajasthan Royals. I hope it is equally exciting for not just Assam but for the whole of Northeast India. As per the IPL governing council, Rajasthan Royals will play at least two matches here in this wonderful stadium next year. That is subject to the IPL IMG operation programme… I am very excited to see the IPL is coming to the Northeast India. I am looking forward to see the Northeast passion for soccer…Northeast passion for sports to turn towards Rajasthan Royals,” said Bedale addressing the media at Barsapara Assam Cricket Association (ACA) stadium on November 6.

Though the ACA stadium was speculated to be hosting IPL matches in the previous years, it didn’t happen. With this development, the 36,000-seater stadium, equipped with modern facilities, will be the one of the major venues in the eastern India.

“Not just because son of the soil, our executive chairman Ranjit (Borthakur) is from here. But we have probably one of the most exciting young cricketers of the country…another son of the soil Riyan Parag from Assam who is becoming a star not just for the Rajasthan Royals but for the whole India,” he added.

He also announced that the Rajasthan Royals would start an academy in association with the ACA to groom young talents from the region.

Bedale hinted that Riyan Parag, who did a fantastic job for the team last season, will likely to be retained for the next season.
