Kamrup Metro admin initiates Green Home Awards for Guwahati residents
To make people more aware of greenery, Kamrup Metro district administration, in association with NGO Help Earth, has come with the concept of Green Home Awards for the city residents. Top five houses will be selected from all the entries before leaving it for public voting.
The special awards will be given in the later part of the year.
Deputy commissioner M Angamuthu said that there will be several criteria on which the top five will be selected. Later, winners will be selected on the basis of public voting through social media.
“A policy of eco-sustainable development is the need of the hour. Thus, to make people aware of the need of green spaces within their home and to make them interested to save these green spaces, Kamrup Metro district administration has come up with the concept of Green Home Awards. The main aim is to promote green homes in Guwahati,” the deputy commissioner said.
The award will be a web-based initiative where people will be encouraged to register their home for the award.
“We will decide on amount of greenery and cleanliness besides how every household works on spreading greenery. I hope it will create more awareness regarding making our city greener,” said Angamuthu.
Guwahati residents can register at greenhomeguwahati.com and fill up a questionnaire. Later, the volunteers of the district administration and Help Earth will make a survey before screening by a panel of experts. Following this, top five houses will be selected from all the entries and finally will be open for public voting.
The DC also termed Guwahati to be lucky to have the privilege of being surrounded by 18 hills, two wildlife sanctuaries, eight reserve forests and a Ramsar site all compressed within an area of 216 sq km. “To add to this list, the river Brahmaputra cuts across the city making it habitable for wide variety of life forms, including us,” added Angamuthu.
On the occasion of World Environment day, the Kamrup district administration has also undertaken massive plantation drives in various places of the district. In collaboration with Round Table Guwahati, steps have been taken to plant 300 saplings in and around the premises of Saraighat Lake, Amingaon.
