With Tigmanshu Dhulia-directed ‘Yaara’ all set to release on OTT platform ZEE5, Assam has a special reason to rejoice as Kenny Basumatary plays one of the main roles in the crime thriller which is a remake of 2011 French movie Gang Story.
Kenny is part of a gang of four called the Chaukdi Gang in the film. The film traces the life and friendship of four criminals, their rise and fall, in the backdrop of operations across the India-Nepal border.
It has been a great experience for Kenny to work with Tigmanshu who is known for some of the highly acclaimed films of Indian film industry.
“Working with Tigmanshu Dhulia was great because he is a wonderful actor himself and he always knows exactly what he wants. There were several instances when I would go on set fully prepared with my lines, only to find he had freshly rewritten the scene into something better. So I always had to be prepared, but also ready to be quick on my feet and adapt to new things,” Kenny told The News Mill, sharing his experience.
The film also features Vidyut Jammwal, Amit Sadh, Vijay Verma, Shruti Haasan and Sanjay Mishra.
“I cannot comment on others’ methods of working, but there were a couple of instances when I had rehearsed my lines a certain way, but Tishu sir (Tigmanshu Dhulia) would show me exactly how he wanted it, and I changed it accordingly. He always wanted real performances, not ‘acting’,” Kenny added.
Yaara, which is produced by Sunir Kheterpal for Azure Entertainment, will start streaming from July 25.
Though it is a remake of ‘Gang Story’, the director has completely given an Indian look to it.
“I have not watched Gang Story. I only read the synopsis. And I think Tishu sir has made many changes to the story and ‘Indianized’ it completely,” Kenny reckoned.
Kenny, who has set an image for himself with a series of successful films as director, further said that he enjoys both his roles as director and actor.
“I am happy in both modes. Being a director myself helps me to understand the other director’s workload when I am in their sets. So, I try to cooperate and do my part as efficiently as possible, and give him or her exactly what they want,” he added.
Kenny became a household name following the grand success of ‘Local Kung Fu’ series. Another film ‘Suspended Inspector Boro’ also got good response from the viewers.
Now, he is working on his next project as director ‘Local Utpaat’, an action-comedy.
