Khandu proposes discussions on issue of autonomous councils
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on August 5 proposed for discussions on the issue of Mon Autonomous Council (MAC) and Patkai Autonomous Council (PAC) in the state.
Addressing a press conference in Itanagar over the issue, Khandu suggested the demand committees along with their community-based organisations (CBOs), to hold discussions with other CBOs, intellectuals and youth leaders of the state in this regard.
“From state government side, a panel of ministers headed by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein will witness this discussion. As it is a matter of constitution, a panel of legal experts headed by additional advocate general will also witness it. It is necessary to have a solution,” he said.
Mentioning about the chronology of events, Khandu said the demand for MAC creation is not new, as the matter is being taken up since 2003.
It was also debated in state Assembly many a time and also representation submitted at the central level too, the CM said.
The MAC matter resurfaced recently, with the Mon Autonomous Region Demand Committee (MARDC) submitting a memorandum to Khandu, requesting the state government to take up the long-pending demand of MAC.
Since the matter resurfaced, Khandu has faced criticism from different organisations.
