The Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura Jishnu Dev Varma while releasing the film in Kokborok language on February 13 called upon the young talents to work with dedication and passion to build a cultural asset of the state to contribute to development.
Addressing the gathering in Tripura University auditorium after releasing film Kwtham Kothoma (three folk tales) based on folklore of Tripura has been produced by assistant professor of journalism and mass communication and leading media academic of northeast Sunil Kalai, Dev Varma said the government has been working for the building physical infrastructure and facilities for the future generation but cultural assets have to be created by the intellectuals.
“The film Kwtham Kothoma is sponsored by Tripura Tribal Research and Cultural Institute of the state government for the reason for documenting the important folklore of indigenous communities. The indigenous society has been governed by hundreds of stories, beliefs, and traditions, hardly which is found in written or documented form but those things are important for cultural history and civilization. We want more such initiatives to form the professionals and institutions for future generations,” Dev Varma said.
He pointed out that the concept of modernization today created a hegemony in the cultural heritage of the civilization and Tripura society is not excluded from the list and added, “I understand modernity is accepting the past, believe on present and taking them to future where such initiatives will enrich our cultural repository and history of civilization.”
Dev Varma however, stated that government can build roads, hospitals, schools and other social infrastructure, which is for improvement of day to day life but cultural assets like film, documentaries, books and research papers always required to come from academic and competent people and institutions.
“I appreciate Tripura University for shouldering the responsibility of social asset creation and especially to young talent Sunil Kalai who embarked into the herculean task to script the popular fairytales of tribal society and depicted them with sound, light and visual effects, which will certainly be acclaimed across the globe and to bring applause for the state,” he added.
