Landslides in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills block Guwahati-Silchar highway

Due to continuous heavy rains, massive landslides occurred in some parts of NH-6 in Meghalaya under Lumshnong police station on June 16 leading to disruption of communication with the neighbouring states Assam, Mizoram, Tripura and some parts of Manipur.

With the damage, heavy motor vehicles were advised not to take this route. Police and local administration are in action to restore normalcy and help the stranded passengers and drivers with necessary assistance.

More landslides were reported near Treiongriang bridge on Jowai – Amlarem road. In West Jaintia Hills, traffic has been halted and clearing is in progress, said local police.

Fresh landslides in Guwahati

Fresh landslides were reported from various parts of Guwahati on June 15 and 16 amid incessant rainfall, which also led to heavy waterlogging in most parts of the city.

There was no report of any fresh casualty during the day.

Assam has registered 42 deaths due to floods and landslides this year, including the four who were buried under a huge mass of earth in Boragaon in the Guwahati area on June 14.

An Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) official said that debris pileups caused by landslides have blocked thoroughfares in Geetanagar, Sonapur, Kalapahar and Nijarapar areas.

The Kamrup Metro district administration has appealed to people to step out of their homes only if they have urgent or essential work.

Deputy commissioner of Kamrup Metro, Pallav Gopal Jha, has issued an order directing all schools, colleges and educational institutions to suspend classes in the wake of a rainfall alert issued by Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
