Former chief election commissioner (CEC) Hari Shankar Brahma said that linking Aadhaar cards with Voter ID cards will help to remove large number of duplicate and spurious voters in the electoral rolls in the country and will help to purify the election database.

Welcoming the decision taken by the centre by introducing the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2021 which was passed in the parliament, Hari Shankar Brahma said that, linking Voter ID card with Aadhaar card is best in the country to conduct elections.

“It is a very good idea. Linking Voter ID card with Aadhaar card is best in the country and after that, you can detect and remove duplicate, bogus Voter ID cards and purify the electoral rolls, election database. In earlier elections there were many allegations that, many spurious names, non-Indian people’s name appeared in the electoral roll,” he said.

“In Assam, non-Indian people’s names have appeared in the voter list and linking Aadhaar with Voter ID cards will help to remove the spurious voters from the list,” Brahma added.

He also said that, it will facilitate the enrolment of new voters.

Linking Aadhaar with Voter ID cards will help people when they shift cities and want to cast their vote there. It will become an easy process to change the voting address when people shift to a new city or place,” Hari Shankar Brahma said.

He further said that, linking Aadhaar with Voter ID cards will easily verify the identity of any person. It will help to smoothly conduct the election.

In 2012 Hari Shankar Brahma had given a proposal to link Voter ID cards with Aadhaar card so that to remove duplicate, spurious voter cards.
