A train loco pilot died of electrocution at Guwahati railway station on January 18 evening, officials said on January 19.

The incident took place at around 7:40 pm at platform number 7 of the railway station.

According to NF Railway, chief public relations officer Guneet Kaur, the incident took place at around 7:40 pm while train No. 15613 Guwahati – Murkongselek Lachit Express was standing at platform No. 7.

“With profound grief, we inform you that one of our railwaymen, loco pilot of Rangiya division, Shri Siba Saikia, breathed his last at Guwahati Railway Station on 18th January, 2022,” a statement from the NF Railway said on January 19.

“On duty loco pilot of the train, Shri Siba Saikia from Rangapara North, while conducting loco check, unfortunately got electrocuted,” NF Railway added.

The deceased person, Siva Saikia, hailed from Borpathar area in Assam’s Golaghat district.

“The incident happened during loco check. The post-mortem is being conducted and his body will be taken to his native place in Golaghat district,” Guneet Kaur said.

The NF Railway CPRO also said that, the Railway department will extend all help and support to the family members of Shiva Saikia.

“Immediately after the incident, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police (GRP) and doctors rushed to the incident site and found him to be in state of death. Later, the body of the deceased was handed over to GRP officials of Guwahati station for further course of action. His body was taken to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital where after post mortem; his body will be taken to Barpathar (Golaghat, Assam) from where he belonged. All help is being extended from Railway authorities,” the NF Railway statement added.

The Guwahati railway station was exclusively serviced by diesel locomotive up till recently when electrification was completed at the station. The first passenger train to run entirely on electric traction arrived at Kamakhya station in Guwahati on October 22, 2021 while the authorization for electric loco operations till Guwahati station was received on November 4, 2021.
