A man was killed allegedly by his roommate and the body set on fire after a drunken brawl in Shillong late on June 14 night, police said on June 15.

Police arrested one Melvin Kharkongor in connection with the murder.

East Khasi Hills district police chief, Claudia Lyngwa said that a police team and a fire fighting team rushed on June 14 night after they were alerted that a rice godown in Madanrting Block F was on fire. Later the team found a body identified as that of one Ramesh Bora (45).

“Initial investigation indicates that Kharkongor had bludgeoned Bora to death with a shovel and set the body on fire,” the police official said.

Lyngwa said three persons were picked up by the police for allegedly killing the person.

However, after initial interrogation, out of the three, two were released while Kharkongor was arrested.

Lyngwa said the deceased was a resident of the area for the past four years and was working as a helper in the rice godown.
