A 55-year-old man from Assam’s Karbi Anglong district was tested COVID-19 positive on June 9 after his death on June 8.

The man, identified as one Arun Kakoti and a resident of a village about 65 km from headquarter town of Diphu in Karbi Anglong district, had returned from Chennai in May.

He was brought dead to the Diphu Medical College and Hospital on June 8, and the swab sample collected after his death had tested positive for COVID-19.

The man was in home quarantine after testing negative for the virus during his stay in an institutional quarantine, but his health had deteriorated while at home.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the rise in the death toll on June 9.

The overall COVID-19 tally in Assam increased to 2868 with detection of 33 new cases on June 9, till the filing of this report.

Among the new patients, 17 are from Tinsukia, four from Jorhat and three from Barpeta.

The number of active cases in the state now stands at 2076, while 784 others have recovered till now.
