Manipur excise department has sought help, co-operation and assistance from the district administrations and police in its intensified drive against illicit liquor in view of the upcoming elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

An official source said on December 23 that despite the enforcement of the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act, 1991, there have been illegal sales of IMFL, beers and distilled illicit liquor in some parts of the state by some vested individuals and unauthorized vendors.

In view of the ensuing election to the Manipur Legislative Assembly, which is due in February-March, 2022, and to ensure smooth conduct of free, fair and peaceful election, there is the urgent need to monitor production, storage and distribution of liquor during election.

Personnel of the excise department have been conducting raids and seizure of these illicit intoxicating liquors as per the relevant provisions and sections of the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act, 1991.

At the same time, there is the urgent need for conducting intensive vigil over the inter-state movement of vehicles at excise check posts and border check posts by the enforcement team. All these activities are being performed by the excise department under the officer-in-charge of all 39 excise stations under the supervision of additional commissioner of excise and superintendent of excise and under overall supervision of commissioner of excise.

However, the department is facing acute shortage of manpower and lack of required infrastructures, vehicles and other logistic support. So, it is felt that the help, co-operation and assistance of the DCs and SPs of the district are inevitably required for smooth conduct of frequent raids and seizures of these illicit liquors.

While seeking the help, the excise department also urged to hand over the seized liquors to the concerned authorities of the excise department after observing all due formalities.

The commissioner of excise has also ordered additional commissioner of excise, superintendent of excise, enforcement team and officer-in-charge of all excise stations to conduct frequent and regular raids and seized illegal and illicit intoxicating IMFL, beers, country liquors in coordination with concerned officer as per rules with immediate effect and until further order.
