Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh paid floral tributes to Rajarshi Bhagyachandra on his 222nd death anniversary at a function held at Govindaji Temple, Palace Compound, Imphal East on October 19.

King Bhagyachandra is known for successfully defending Manipur against attacks by Burmese emperors and for introducing Manipuri classical Raas Leela.

Singh remembered Rajarshi Bhagyachandra as a great ruler, who brought a new dimension to the Manipuri society. He urged the people to pray for peace and a healthy society on his death anniversary.

Manipur seeks Centre’s view on imposing total lockdown to contain COVID-19

Responding to a query regarding a sudden rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said that the whole nation had been badly affected by the virus. He added that it is hard to contain the pandemic as it is caused by a new virus, which has no vaccine.

“Although lockdown had slowed down the spread of the disease up to a large extent, but affected the economy as well,” he said. As such, many countries have adopted strict compliance of SOPs as the only effective measure to restrict the positivity rate, he added.

Unfortunately, in Manipur, N Biren Singh said, people are seemingly less bothered about following the SOPs. Stating that the situation in the past few days is quite alarming in the state, he informed that the government has identified the areas and the pockets, which are severely affected. Total lockdowns would be imposed in these areas to prevent further spread, he informed.

The chief minister also urged the local clubs to get involved in government’s efforts of fighting the virus. He said the state government has also sought advice from the Centre regarding the imposition of a state-wide total lockdown for a couple of weeks.
