Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma called on union coal minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi on Sunday along with state PWD minister Prestone Tynsong, tourism minister Metbah Lyngdoh and sports and youth affairs minister Banteidor Lyngdoh.

Officials from the ministry of coal were also present in the meeting.

The chief minister along with his cabinet colleagues discussed on way forward to operational coal mining in Meghalaya with thrust on balance between environment and economic activity related to mining.

The issue of National Green Tribunal (NGT) ban on coal mining in Meghalaya was discussed at length.

“Coal mining is important for the state and the region. It is important that a balance is strike considering the fragile environment. We discussed on ways to initiate coal mining in the state,” said Sangma after the meeting.

The union minister has given a positive response to the suggestions and ideas put forward by the CM and his cabinet colleagues.

“The union minister has assured finding an early solution to the problem,” the CM added.
