Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday inspected the bypass road from Mawlai and VIP road in Shillong along with deputy CM Prestone Tynsong, Mawlai MLA Process T Sawkimie and Umroi MLA George Lyngdoh.

The CM also inspected Shillong Airport at Umroi with MLA George Lyngdoh in presence of officials from Transport Department and officials of Airport Authority of India.

“The work of Mawlai bypass is in progress and works are in full swing to ensure that it is made operation at the earliest. We are working on tight deadlines and the road connectivity is very important as this will be an effort to ease traffic congestion in Shillong city,” said Sangma after inspecting the Mawlai bypass.

He also inspected the VIP road stretch from Mawlai to Umroi and discussed at length with officials to improve the road connectivity.

Inspecting the Shillong Airport at Umroi, the CM expressed his concerns to improve air connectivity of the state with other parts of the country. He said that he would travel to New Delhi next week to discuss on improving air connectivity in Meghalaya particularly the Shillong airport, which is important in view of the National Games to be hosted in Meghalaya in 2022.

“We discussed at on measures to be taken for expansion of runways and its technical feasibility to make the Shillong airport fully functional,” said the CM.
