Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma during a meeting on July 23, 2021

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma spoke to his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma as tension prevailed in Ri-Bhoi district’s Iongkhuli village after Assam Police allegedly removed a few electricity poles.

“I had a talk with the honorable chief minister of Assam yesterday and today also. Even though he was very busy because of the unfortunate incidents that took place in Mizoram, he still managed to speak and we both have decided that there should not be any further instigation and we should try to maintain peace,” Conrad Sangma told reporters on July 27.

“Therefore, both sides have been asked to refrain and restrain and accordingly that is what is happening,” he said and informed that he has asked the local MLA of Jirang assembly constituency, S Sohtun to go and make a field visit, which he had carried out on July 27.

“He had gone down to ‘ground zero’ and has met the people and will be submitting a report to me very shortly,” the Meghalaya chief minister said, adding that he has been in touch with deputy commissioner of Ri-Bhoi district, RM Kurbah.

“Our chief secretary (MS Rao) has also spoken to his counterpart in Assam and accordingly the deputy commissioner of Ri-Bhoi district is also in constant touch with the deputy commissioner of Kamrup,” Sangma said.

“The matter, as of now is under control and we also urge everybody in both sides that we should maintain peace. Both the state governments are working towards finding an amicable solution to this. So therefore, we will work towards it,” he iterated.

Both Sangma and Sarma had met in Shillong on July 23 last to discuss about the Meghalaya-Assam boundary row and had made a joint statement to move forward “beyond status quo” and work out a practical solution to the vexed issue.
