A constable of Meghalaya police, currently posted at New Delhi, has tested positive for Novel Coronavirus, a police official in Shillong confirmed on Sunday.

Meghalaya police spokesperson Gabriel Iangrai said the constable was tested positive for COVID-19 on May 23, and thereafter was kept under isolation ward in Wazirabad by the unit doctor of the battalion.

“ … since his health was not improving, he was referred to LNJP Hospital, New Delhi on May 28, and the medical officials after checking upon his health condition placed him under mandatory quarantine in the hospital,” the police official said.

The family members of the ailing constable had on May 30 claimed that the constable was denied medical attention at the hospital since the day he was admitted at LNJP Hospital.

Iangrai said that as the personnel is under quarantine in the hospital, attendants could not be provided to him as the current protocols prohibits having attendants in the quarantine units.

However, he said that the unit doctor of the battalion is constantly in contact with the medical officials of the hospital, who are treating him and as of May 31, the ailing constable is recuperating.

Iangrai informed that further tests will be conducted to ascertain whether the constable will be fit to be discharged in the coming days. “As a preventive measure, battalion officials who came into direct contact with the patient are also placed under isolation and necessary medical assistance have been assisted to these officials,” the spokesperson said.

Meghalaya Police is closely monitoring and coordinating with the officials of the department at Delhi, and his return to Meghalaya will depend upon the clearance from the authorities of the hospital, which is as per the established protocols.
