Angered by the sub-standard road works in Mizoram, several youth from Lunglei protested against the state PWD department on Monday and burnt effigies of PWD minister Lal Thanzara and two engineers.

The youth, under the aegis of Lunglei Thalai Pawl, were protesting against the poor road conditions on the 10-km Pukpui-Tlawng stretch of the Aizawl-Thenzawl-Lunglei road.

The demonstrators, around 50-60 youth, took to the streets and showed how poor the road construction works were going on by peeling off the newly laid bitumen layer with their bare hands. Videos of the protest were circulated on the social media.

Later, they lodged an FIR at Lunglei demanding action against the engineers.

“We have appealed to the engineers several times about the sub-standard construction. They have been giving us false promise. It is heartbreaking to see the condition of the roads which the PWD has claimed it as repaired…you can peel the bitumen with a scratch,” said Lunglei Thalai Pawl general secretary J Lalzawmliana.
