Sukla Borthakur and her husband toil hard to make both ends meet. Living in a rented house in Guwahati, the couple work for long hours in their respective private establishments. The couple has to go extra miles in their work to support their only son Upakul, who is a divyangjan.

However, in their fight to provide relief to wheelchair-bound Upakul, the couple has received substantial support from the government.

“We have received all the due support from the government. Upakul gets Rs 12,000 every year. Besides, we received other government financial assistance from time to time,” said Borthakur.

Thanking the Sarbananda Sonowal-led government in Assam for supporting the family at the time of need, she said: “The government has been supportive all along. But we should come forward to avail the government schemes that we are entitled for.”

Pointing out at the wheelchair, on which the autistic teenager was smiling, the mother said: “Like Upakul, there are a number of divyangjan children for whom there are government schemes. Their parents should come forward to avail these schemes.”

Improvement in implementation of old schemes and introduction of new schemes have provided succour to the numerous such families having divyangjan members across the state.
