The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO), a union of six Naga tribes of eastern districts of Nagaland, has resolved not to extend cooperation to the security forces until their demands are met and justice is delivered to the victims of the Oting killings.
ENPO held a joint consultative meeting with all the eastern Nagaland civil societies at Longleng town on December 14 and unanimously passed the resolution.
Simmering tension continued in Nagaland following the December 4 and 5 killings at Oting village of Mon district. Protests are continuing in various places in the state.
According to a release issued by the media cell of ENPO, it said that the meeting was held against the backdrop of the December 4-5 incidents which led to the death of 14 civilians.
“The non-cooperation would abstain from any national celebrations or such activities; non-participation in army civic programmes; non-attendance to any of their official invitations and disallow any recruitment drive within eastern Nagaland areas,” the release stated.
The joint consultative meeting also demanded that Indian security force personnel involved in the killings should be booked under relevant law and be brought under civil court for trial.
The meeting further demanded the withdrawal of Union home minister Amit Shah’s “self-defence statement” in the parliament; and repeal of the ‘draconian’ Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 from the entire Northeast states.
The release also stated that a public rally would be held in all the tribal headquarters on December 16 to protest the killings and demand justice.
The meeting also resolved to write to the state government to immediately set up the Nagaland State Human Rights Commission.
Additionally, it said that December 4 and 5 would be observed as ‘black days’ in the entire ENPO jurisdiction.
