Smartcity Itanagar national highway landslide

Video: ‘Roads go missing’ in smartcity Itanagar after rains

Roads ‘went missing’ in Itanagar on May 31 as heavy rainfall lashed the Arunachal Pradesh capital. A portion of NH-415 was washed away near IG Park in the heart of the capital city, prompting netizens to question the quality of construction work done by the engineering company and the state government.

Interestingly, the construction of the portion of the national highway, connecting Naharlagun and Itanagar, was completed recently.

Netizens had a field day sharing the videos and photographs of the landslide near D-Sector, slamming the poor execution of work by the contractors and officials. Most of them were seen questioning the construction company which was assigned with the task.

Several other locations in the state capital reported landslide and waterlogging. Rainwaters inundated the Akashdeep shopping complex while there was a landslide at the road connecting Government Higher Secondary School and upper C-Sector in Itanagar. “The wall of the DDK is on the verge of collapse due to the landslide,” the Arunachal Times reported.

“Poorly designed and constructed drains in the heart of Itanagar, part of NH-415 which was completed last winter, has triggered flood in the adjoining areas,” the Eastern Sentinel reported.

“Now PWD and TK Engineering, epitome of incompetence will blame the rain for the chaos in Itanagar. Poor rain,” senior journalist Tongam Rina tweeted.
