India’s star javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, won the first gold for the country at the Tokyo Olympics on August 7.
Neeraj became the first-ever athlete representing India in 100 years to win an Olympic medal in track and field. The 23-year-old becomes the first athlete from India to win an Olympics gold.
Neeraj won the competition with 87.58 meters on his second attempt.
He is the second-ever individual gold medalist for India after shooter Abhinav Bindra who won a gold in 2008 Olympics.
Earlier, Neeraj made a stunning throw of 86.59m to make the final from his group in his very first attempt.
