NorthEast United FC has announced the signing of Belgian defender Benjamin Lambot and former Mohun Bagan striker VP Suhair ahead of season 7 of the Indian Super League (ISL).

An experienced defender with well over 15 years of topflight experience, Benjamin Lambot joins NEUFC having last played for Nea Salamis Famagusta FC in Cyprus.

Benjamin Lambot came through the ranks in Belgium, spending 8 years at Tubize which was his boyhood club. Lambot went on to ply his trade for other Belgian clubs like Virton, Royal Antwerp, Lierse and Cercle Brugge.

On his move, Benjamin Lambot said: “I am really happy to be a Highlander and looking forward to the Indian Super League (ISL) experience. I can’t wait to get started with the team.”

Speaking on the signing, NorthEast United’s executive director Priya Runchal said: “Defence was one of the areas where we needed an experienced campaigner to guide the younger players and in Benjamin, we saw the right fit for that role. We are confident in his abilities and believe that he will have a significant role to play in the upcoming campaign.”

On the other hand, the 28-year-old VP Suhair was a key player for the title winning Mohun Bagan squad last season, netting twice and assisting as many times to mark off an eventful campaign for the Mariners.

Having begun his career for the State Bank of Travancore team, VP Suhair has represented Kerala in the Santosh trophy and also had stints at Gokulam Kerala FC and United SC.

“I am very excited to be a part of the Highlanders family and play in the Indian Super League (ISL). There will be a lot to learn from head coach Gerard Nus and coach Khalid Jamil, and I cannot wait to join the rest of the squad for pre-season,” Suhair said.

Earlier, the Guwahati-based side has signed French-born Mauritanian defensive midfielder Khassa Camara and Portuguese winger Luís Machado. The club also decided to retain Uruguayan forward Federico Gallego.
