Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of an indoor stadium and a swimming pool at North Kamrup Stadium in Nalbari on Saturday.

The indoor stadium and the swimming pool will be built under SOPD scheme of PWD building and national highway.

Speaking at the function, Sonowal maintained that sports has been one of the priorities of the present state government and it is using sports as a tool to strengthen age-old unity among all sections of the people of the state. He said that sports is a medium through which peace and tranquillity of the state can be stimulated and that is why the present dispensation has set the target of making Guwahati the sports capital of the country.

He however, maintained that creation of parallel state-of-the-art infrastructure in other parts of the state is one of the agendas that the government is resolutely pursuing. He also informed about the budgetary sports competitions at district, ZPC and block level. He said that a network of 500 state-of-the-art playgrounds would also be built under CMSGUY and budgetary provisions have already been made to achieve this target.

Sonowal said that sport is a medium which makes children fit, disciplined and dedicated. He, therefore, urged the parents and teachers to help the children to inculcate love for sports.
