With two days to go for end of the current phase of nationwide lockdown to contain the COVID-19 spread, the Assam government on May 29 said that it wants the night curfew to continue.

Talking to reporters in Guwahati, Assam Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Except for the night curfew, we are okay with resumption of other activities. We want to continue with the curfew as it is helping us. It can be from 9 pm instead of 7 pm.”

“But beyond that, we want other normal activities to resume. Shopping malls and educational institutions can also open gradually. Once the people get accustomed to the health and hygiene rules, it can function in full swing,” he added.

Sarma said people of the state have already acclimatised themselves to the new norms like wearing masks, physical distancing, etc. and hence, resumption of all activities should not be a problem.

“However, it is for the central government to take a call and we will abide by its directive,” he added.
