Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing an election campaign rally in Dhanbad on Thursday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the people of Assam and the entire Northeast need not worry about the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the parliament and urged them not to fall in trap of the Congress which was spreading lies on the issue.

“I want to assure my brothers and sisters of Assam that they have nothing to worry after the passing of CAB. I want to assure them from the land of Bhole Baba (Deoghar in Jharkhand) that no one can take away your rights, unique identity and beautiful culture. It will continue to flourish and grow,” the prime minister said at an election rally held at Barwadda in Jharkhand on December 12.

The central government and the BJP are totally committed to constitutionally safeguard the political, linguistic, cultural and land rights of the Assamese people as per the spirit of Clause 6, he said.

Modi said that almost the entire Northeast is out of the ambit of the Citizenship Amendment bill.

He accused the Congress party of indulging in the politics of illegal insurgents and trying to mislead the people. He said that the central government was working with regional political parties, regional councils and other bodies of the Northeast for the development of the area.

The prime minister said, he has travelled more to Assam and the entire Northeast combined with the tenure of all the previous prime ministers of the country. He said that the government was working on the Look East Policy and was trying to make the area the growth engine of the country.
