Bir Tikendrajit Singh, known as ‘Lion of Manipur’ was remembered on August 13 on his death anniversary. The day is also observed as the Patriot’s Day in Manipur.
“On this Patriots’ Day, with great honour, paid tributes to our brave martyrs; Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General who fought gallantly against the British empire in 1891,” Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh said after paying tribute to the bravehearts in Imphal.
The ceremony was attended by MLAs from all the parties and senior government officials.
“Humble tributes to our brave forefathers who laid down their lives for the dignity, integrity and sovereignty of Manipur on this Patriots’ Day. It was on this day that Bir Tikendrajit & Thangal General were hanged to death for resisting the British imperialism,” Biren Singh tweeted.

On the fateful day of August 13 in 1891, Yubraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General among others were hanged in front of the public at Pheidabung after the graceful defeat in the war against the British. Patriots’ Day is observed every year on August 13 with the highest kind of tribute and honour the Manipuris can pay to those martyrs in remembrance of their bravery and love of their motherland.
Paying his tribute Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “A great patriot, Bir Tikendrajit Singh inspired people in his native land to rise up against the oppressive colonial regime and fight for their freedom with his heroic struggle against the British Raj.”

Manipur minister for power, forest, environment and climate change, agriculture, science and technology Biswajit Singh also paid his tribute.
“He was called the ‘Lion of Manipur’ as he fearlessly fought against Britishers & laid down his life during the freedom movement. He will always be remembered for his courage & patriotism,” Biswajit said in a tweet.
Assam Trinamool Congress president Ripun Bora said: “My solemn tributes to the Prince of Manipur Bir Tikendrajit Singh on his death anniversary today.”
“He was the Commander-in-Chief of the Manipur Army. He took a leading role in opposing British interference in the affairs of the independent Manipur state,” Bora added.
