Experts from Singapore arrived in Assam to damage control at oil well blowout site at Baghjan in Tinsukia on June 7. They reached Guwahati and were headed for the site.

Oil India Limited (OIL) which operates the oil well sought help from the foreign experts after failing to control the blowout which took place on May 27.

The experts from M/s Alert are senior well control operations and team leader Michael Ernest Allcorn, senior well control engineer Craig Neil Duncan and senior well control specialist Edward Harris MacLeod.

OIL spokesman Tridip Hazarika said that they are likely to start their work on June 8.

The environmentalists and locals have been raising concern that the continuous leakage of gas and oil could harm the wildlife and human lives in the surrounding areas.

Maguri-Motapung wetland, a famous ecotourism spot is located towards the south of the site which is not even a kilometer away. Dibru Saikhowa National Park, another biodiversity hotspot is also located nearby.

Already an endangered river dolphin was found dead along with a large number of fishes in the water bodies nearby.

The OIL authorities, however, said that they will compensate the lost of livelihood and other issues to the villagers in the neighbouring areas.
